Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia. The capital of Perlis is Kangar. The Royal capital is Arau, the Imperial Palace is located 10 kilometers east of Kangar. Other major towns such as Padang Besar, at the Malaysian-Thailand border. The main port and ferry is at the small village of Kuala Perlis, linking mostly to Langkawi Island and Satun Port, Thailand. Other towns are included, Kaki Bukit, Pauh, Mata Ayer, Sanglang, Simpang Empat, Sungai Baru, Beseri, Bukit Keteri, Wang Kelian, and Chuping.


Population and Area

According to 2010 statistics, Perlis has a population of 240,100. The main inhabitants of Malay 99.6%, Chinese 11%, while the Indians 1.4%. Perlis is the total area of ​​795 sq.km.

Main inhabitants are Malays, Chinese, Thai, Indian and others. "Don Siam" is the Chinese and Thai-born descendants of intermarriage, common in the Perlis. The main reason of intermarriage because many Chinese and Thai living in the same community with the same religion of Buddhist. The main language of communication is the use of Malay. Chinese and Tamil only used between the same racial. Perlis are mostly HokKien speakers , other chinese dialects are included Chaozhou, Guangdong, Hakka, Hainan, Hokkien are wider use at Perlis. Other language is English.

Tourist Attractions

1. Gua Kelam
Gua Kelam is one of the most distinctive caves in Malaysia. It located no more than one km from Kaki Bukit and 26 km north of Kangar. Previously, Kaki Bukit are the famous mining areas, it is a limestone cave, mining taken from underground caves or suspension bridge. Gua Kelam is around 370 metre long limestone cave. This cave is illuminated by colored lights. You may view the spectacular world of various stalagmites and stalactites inside the cave.

The only path to the cave is via eight-foot wide wooden suspension bridge. The bridge links Kaki Bukit to the Wan Tangga Valley, a valley on the opposite end of Gua Kelam.

Originally it just a natural cave with a lot of flowing stream. The mine worker digging out into the water pathway and use it as a brilliant method to transport tin ore from a mine located near the stream entrance through the underground cavern to Kaki Bukit. It be the second longest water pathway at Malaysia. This unique cave mining method is extremely dangerous mining methods. There have waterfall and Deer Park Cave surrounded the Gua Kelam. Visitors may enjoy the forest garden, bridge, stream at Wan Tangga after they go to the opposite end of Gua Kelam.

2. Tasik Melati
Tasik Melati is a shallow lake which around ten kilometers north from Kangar. Originally it was a natural wetland, artificially expanded to become Tasik Melati. Previously there are around 150 large and small sandbar all over the lake, and now just leave about 128. You can walk on the man-made steel bridges, or ride sampan in the lake. A lot of equipment around the lake such as walkways, children's playgrounds, artificial landscape, aisle for foot massage and so on. It is a nice leisure destination and suitable place to relax, the bird watching, and picnic as well. You also can see the beautiful view of the Kaki Bukit and Bukit Keteri.

3. Sg. Batu Pahat
Sg. Batu Pahat is a good place for leisure. It located about nine kilometers north of Kangar. A lot of recreational places at Sg. Batu Pahat which Included Bird Park and Taman Ular. Taman Ular is the only snake park in Malaysia purposely collect a wide variety of snake species, including toxic and non-toxic, and other reptiles. The Snake Park set up primarily is to study resistance to snake venom. Apart of scientific research purposes, Taman Ular also open to visitors. Putra Golf Club near to the Snake Park, which well known for its challenging 18 hole of golf. Others leisure place included Genting Kubu Waterfall.

4. Bukit Ayer
Bukit Ayer located about four kilometers from Sg. Batu Pahat. Several natural recreation places are located at Bukit Ayer area, which are included Taman Herba and Taman Rekreasi Bukit Ayer. Taman Rekreasi Bukit Ayer included tropical rain forest, waterfall, spring and pool. This leisure park is an excellent location for picnics, jungle trekking, camping as well.

5. Taman Rekreasi Bukit Kubu
Taman Rekeasi Bukit Kubu is located at one kilometer from port of Perlis. There have a small lake, walkways and shade gazebo at this forest recreation area.

Bukit Pinang is one of the area of Taman Rekreasi Bukit Kubu. There are many limestone caves at this forest recreation which is the characteristics of Taman Rekreasi Bukit Kubu.it is also known as the "Cave Park."

The geological of the lime mountain within the recreation area are believed form at the same period with the Kilim Geoforest Park, Langkawi.

6. Muzium Kota Kayang
This Museum located at Kayang which is five kilometers away from Kangar. A lot of information of the state are able to find at this museum. Its included more than 5,000 years of history, the geology and geography as well. Ancient Buddhist artifacts in India and antiquities also can be found at this museum.

7. Kangar
Kangar is the capital of the state, also known as Bandar Sejahtera. There are many landmarks and recreational areas, which include Bulatan Jubli Emas, a large clock tower, Dataran Dato 'Sheikh Ahmad, Dataran Sungai Perlis, Taman Sg. Perlis, Muzium Negeri, Masjid Alwi, Bukit Lagi, Gua Cenderawasih, Taman Bunga Kertas, Memorial Perlis, etc. Plaza Padang Bandaran (also known as Independence Square Padang Merdeka),Taman Budaya.

8.Arau
Imperial, a number of important landmarks such as the Royal Palace (Istana Diraja), Royal Exhibition Building (Galeri Diraja), Royal Tombs (Makam Diraja), railway station and the State Mosque (Masjid Negeri).

9. Padang Besar
Padang Besar located at Malaysia and Thailand’s border, a town of the region into Malaysia and Thailand. In Malaysia the same area called Padang Besar. In Thailand, this area is known as the town Pekan Siam. This place is the important points for Thailand people to enter Malaysia. There are a lot of shopping bazaar at this place. It was people's shopping paradise.

10. Wang Kelian
A town located at Malaysia and Thailand’s border with connect to Thailand's Wang Prachan . Every weekend, people in both countries can shopping at this free shopping bazaar.

11.Tasik Timah Tasoh
A very large artificial lake, serve as reservoirs, flood control dam and power generation place. It is also a good place for fishing. You can watch a lot of birds at this lake during October to March each year.


Transportation

Flight
There is no airport at Perlis, visitors must fly to Alor Star, and then transfer bus or taxi, the whole journey is about 45 minutes. Or visitor can select Kepala Batas, the Kedah Sultan Abdullah Halim Airports to be the flight landing.

•Road
Road transport included private cars, buses and taxis. There are three major highways to inter Perlis from Kedah state: Changlun – Kuala Perlis Highway, the North-South Expressway and Arau – Jitra Highways. From north south Highway, in Changlun turn into Chunglun-Kuala Perlis Highway, or from Jitra to north, first arrive of town is Arau. From Alor Setar go to Perlis follow the Federal Road, the first arrive town will be Simpang Empat.

For those visitors who enter to Malaysia from Thailand, they can get the city visa at Padang Besar’s border or they can choose another Malaysia’s border- Bukit Kayu Hitam to entry Kedah, go to North-South Expressway, then turn into Chunglun-Kuala Perlis Highway to Arau. In Kangar, there have a long-distance bus hub nearby KWSP building (Bangunan KWSP) and Jalan Bukit Lagi; There have a local bus terminal and taxi hub at Kayangan Square, next to Jalan Penjara. Long-distance bus and taxi terminal is located near to the Port of Perlis.

•Railway
Those visitors whether from Kuala Lumpur to the north or south from Bangkok, they can get off at Arau or Padang Besar train station. Train services can be divided into first-class carriages (with beds), second class (with beds) and third-class compartment (seats).

•Port
Perlis is the gateway or the main entrance to the Langkawi Port Terminal. Ferry provide daily operation service with run every hour from Port of Perlis to Langkawi.
